Seat Altea (04 - 15)

This was a real style statement and was one of the most distinctive family cars in years. When first released, the words used to describe it included ‘vibrant’, ‘sexy’, and ‘sporty’. There’s also a full-size MPV version of the Altea. In keeping with the sporty tone of the exterior, the cabin is just as easy on the eye. It’s obvious SEAT had put a lot of thought and detail into the quality of the trims, seats, and dashboard, and with the huge amount of standard kit and safety features on board, it is easy to operate. It handles well; the steering is nicely weighted and the gear change is smooth. It also scores on safety as it did really well in the NCAP safety test.

Look out for

•  Apparently low temperatures can corrupt the digital L.E.D display

What we like

•  Neat and distinctive styling will appeal to most driver types

•  Great choice of efficient engines. The Ecomotive version is noteworthy.

•  Decent amount of interior space and a big boot

•  It is enjoyable and easy to drive

•  Well-equipped and well-priced. Inexpensive to keep on the road too

What we don't like

•  The ride quality is a bit on the firm side when on rougher surfaces
